Fitting Guide & Safety Instructions

Thank you for choosing GentleStep. Correct fitting is important to ensure your dog stays safe, comfortable, and secure while walking.

Before You Start

  • Introduce the harness calmly and allow your dog to sniff it first
  • Offer treats and praise to create a positive experience
  • Fit the harness indoors before your first walk
  • Use a longer lead at first and try to keep it loose when walking
  • Practice in a low distraction place first 

How to Fit Your GentleStep Harness

Step 1: Open Clip &  Loosen the Straps

Before putting the harness on your dog, loosen the adjustment straps slightly to make fitting easier.

Step 2: Position the Harness

Place the harness over your dog's head, ensuring:

✓ The lead strap sits at the front of the chest
✓ Straps lie flat without twisting
✓ Harness does not rub under the armpits

Step 3: Feed the Belly Strap under your dog’s belly and behind their front legs

Secure all clips or buckles until they click firmly into place.

Check all buckles are fully engaged.

Step 4: Adjust for Fit Belly Strap and Front Lead Strap

Tighten or loosen belly strap (two sliders) strap and adjust the front strap

✔ Ensure when adjusting the front strap that you push both straps together not individually
✔ If adjusted correctly you should be able to fit 2 fingers comfortably between harness and dog
✔ Dog can move shoulders and front legs freely
✔ Harness stays in position when walking

The harness should not slide excessively or rotate around the body.

Check the Fit

Your GentleStep harness is fitted correctly if:

✅ Your dog moves naturally and comfortably
✅ Harness stays secure during walking
✅ No rubbing occurs behind front legs
✅ Dog cannot easily back out of the harness

If your dog appears uncomfortable, readjust before use.

First Walk Recommendation

For the first few walks:

  • Supervise your dog closely
  • Recheck strap adjustments after 10–15 minutes
  • Young dogs and dogs with thick coats may need readjustment over time

Important Safety Information

⚠ Always inspect your harness before use

Do not use if:

  • Buckles are damaged
  • Stitching becomes loose
  • Material shows excessive wear

Never leave your dog unattended while wearing a harness.

Cleaning & Care

To keep your GentleStep harness in good condition:

  • Hand wash in warm water with mild detergent
  • Air dry naturally
  • Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach
